Health Care
What's the Issue?
The cost of getting proper medical care gets higher and higher every year. Many Americans cannot afford to buy health insurance, and some cannot afford to go to a doctor. President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry have ideas about how to make sure all Americans have access to affordable health care. Here are some of the questions facing the candidates:
  • How can the government make sure everyone has access to doctors at affordable prices?
  • What should the government do to help people pay for expensive prescription medicine?
  • Why are prices for medical care so high and what can be done to make sure those costs stay under control?
Where They Stand

George W. Bush says that every American should be able to visit a good doctor, whether or not he or she can pay for it. He also wants to make sure the government continues to research new ways of treating diseases and curing illnesses. Here are some of Bush's other priorities:

  • Improve the health-care program called Medicare to make sure that people can use insurance to choose whatever doctor they want.
  • Make sure that insurance programs pay for tests for cancer, diabetes and other diseases.
  • Give states more money to help pay for special health insurance for children.

John Kerry wants to cut the paperwork involved in getting medical care. He wants to make it cheaper and easier for the average American to see a doctor, and to make sure that nearly everyone can afford health insurance. Here are some of Kerry's other ideas:

  • Make sure the government helps older Americans pay for expensive pills and medicine.
  • Encourage insurance companies to charge fair rates for the coverage they provide.
  • Use new technology to help doctors take care of billing and paperwork more efficiently and cheaply.
