Olympic Football is not the football we watch in the United States. In fact, we call Olympic Football soccer! Football is a popular sport that people have been playing all over the world for a very long time. It began in 80 BC in China when teams took turns kicking a ball between two bamboo poles.
In Football, two teams try to score goals by getting the ball into the other team's goal. There are 11 players on each team, and these players pass the ball back and forth down a field. They may only use their feet or their heads. Other than the goalies, players cannot touch the ball with their hands or arms. The team with the most goals wins.
Ones to Watch: Keep your eye on the men's Brazilian team, which has won the World Cup four times. Also watch Spain, Nigeria, and Italy. In the women's competition, watch the United States, the current Olympic champion, and also Norway and China.
