OLYMPICTIONARY
Basketball was born in the United States when Dr. James Naismith nailed up two peach baskets inside a YMCA in 1892. He was trying to come up with a game students could play indoors. It worked! The game was so popular that only six years later it became a professional sport.
Basketball is a fast moving game. Two teams, each with five players, try to score points by shooting the ball into the opposite team's basket. The basket, or "hoop", is a metal rim with a net hanging from it. Players move the ball up and down the court by bouncing, or "dribbling" it, or passing it to a teammate. Players cannot run while holding the ball. The team that scores the most points wins the game.
Ones to Watch: They won the Gold medal in 1996, and the US "dream team" is still the one to beat at this year's Olympics.
