Free for Fall
Why not take advantage of the colors of fall and bring more color into your classroom? Give these art projects and ideas a try.
Autumn Critters
Leaves can make springboards for imagination. Ask students to collect fallen or still-green leaves. (You can "press" the green leaves by placing them between sheets of paper and then under a heavy object. This will make the finished art last longer.) Have kids glue their leaves to a blank piece of paper. Instruct them to let them minds run wild…what kind of animal does the leaf look like? Have students add the "missing" body parts, such as heads, legs, and tails. Display the leaf creatures in a classroom autumn zoo.
Get Twiggy With It
Ask students to collect small, fallen twigs outside. The odder the shape the better. Kids can uses these twigs as paintbrushes instead of typical brushes.
Color Crumble
Students can crumble up dried leaves and keep them in containers. These pieces of leaves make fun autumn glitter. Sprinkle them just like you would use traditional glitter on any art project.
Helping Out Nature
Students will need to gather large autumn leaves for this art project. Have them "mount" the leaves on a blank piece of paper with glue. Instruct them to add whatever colors they think might be missing from the leaf. Cottons swabs and tempura paints make great tools when adding colors to leaves. Students can also add glitter, foil, magazines, or even parts of other leaves to complete their projects.
Tracking the Beauty of Fall
You'll need leaves, acrylic paints, and construction paper for this project. Ask each student to paint one side of a leaf with the acrylic paint. Have students press their leaves down onto the construction paper and carefully peel back the leaf. This should leave a fun leaf print. Students can create "tracks" that their leaves might "leaf" behind as they go on a fall adventure. Depending on space on the construction paper, students can draw a few stops, such as school or a movie theater, where their leaves might stop on their imaginary trail.
