Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo, one of 31 states in Mexico. Until recently, this state was wild, sparsely settled and mostly populated by the Mayan Indians. Now large areas have been cleared for farming. Tourists continue to flock here, though, for its tropical forests, white beaches and Caribbean coastline.
