The First Boy Peter Pan

TFK Kid Reporter Lily interviews Jeremy Sumpter who plays Peter Pan in the new movie

By Lily Wasserman

Jeremy Sumpter, 14, is an actor from California who stars in the new movie Peter Pan. The movie opened nationwide on December 25. Jeremy recently spoke with TFK Kid Reporter Lily Wasserman about the movie and a few of his favorite things.

Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs) and Peter Pan duel aboard the Jolly Roger in the movie.
TFK: How does it feel to be the first boy to play the part of Peter Pan in a major production?
Jeremy: It feels great. It feels kind of cool knowing that you’re the only boy who ever played Peter Pan. (Editor's note: In past films, the part of Peter Plan was played by adults.)

TFK: How did you prepare for the role?
Jeremy: I trained for three months of sword fighting and flying and that was basically it.

TFK: How did you fly in the movie? Was it hard?
Jeremy: No. It was actually really fun. At first it was really painful though because you’re in a harness and they have straps going around your legs. It wasn’t as fun at the beginning but then, after you get used to the pain after a while, it just becomes, it’s just the greatest thing in the world, being able to fly. And the sword fighting was really fun, too.

TFK: What do you think of Peter Pan as a character? Are you anything like him?
Jeremy: I think I’m a lot like Peter Pan because the director told me that he thinks that I am Peter Pan because of the way I act. I’m energetic, I’m funny, I’m adventurous and so I guess that I’m Peter Pan in the same ways.

TFK: What do you like most and least about acting?
Jeremy: What I like most about acting is that you’re on set, you’re meeting new people, and you meet really famous people and it’s really cool. What I like least is that I don’t get to do it everyday.

Peter Pan and Wendy (Rachel Wood) witness a fairy dance.
TFK: Of all the characters you’ve played, which one do you like best?
Jeremy: Peter Pan, definitely, because he’s a kid, he gets to do anything he wants and that’s what I got to do on set, so I had the most fun on Peter Pan.

TFK: Who’s you’re favorite actor?
Jeremy: My favorite actors are Mel Gibson and Jim Carrey.

TFK: What is your favorite thing to do when you have free time?
Jeremy: My favorite things to do when I have free time are probably surf and golf.

TFK: What’s your favorite book?
Jeremy: My favorite book is called The Giver.

TFK: What was the best holiday gift you’ve ever received?
Jeremy: My first bike.

TFK: Who gave that to you??
Jeremy: My dad.

TFK: Is there anything else you’d like to share with TFK readers?
Jeremy: Yeah. Go watch the movie because you’ll like it!
