A year ago, the name Norah Jones didn’t mean much to music fans. Last night, the artist Norah Jones was the most successful at music’s biggest event, the Grammy Awards. The 23-year-old piano-playing singer took home five Grammys for herself plus three more for the producer, engineer and a songwriter who worked on her debut album, Come Away With Me.

Grammy Awards are given by the music industry's Recording Academy each year to outstanding performers and their music in 104 categories. Time For Kids Kid Reporter Jillian Klueber was on the scene at the awards! Check back tomorrow to read her report.

Norah’s Grammy Sweep
"I feel really blessed and really lucky," said Jones after winning for Album of the Year. Jones beat out Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, Michelle Branch and Ashanti to take home the Grammy for Best New Artist. She also won Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Don't Know Why." Jones tied Alicia Keys (who won five Grammys last year) and Lauryn Hill (who won five Grammys in 1999) for most wins by a female artist in one night.

Gwen Stefani's band No Doubt won Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with "Hey Baby."

"I can't really explain why my record has done so well," said Jones, whose album has sold more than 6 million copies all over the world. Jones was especially surprised to win in pop music categories because her music is more like soft jazz.

Other Grammy Greats
Other big Grammy winners included veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen & his E Street Band and the Dixie Chicks, who took home three Grammys each. Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals went to rock legend Santana and newcomer Michelle Branch for "The Game of Love." John Mayer, who performed at the big show, won for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

After being shut out of all seven of her Grammy nominations last year, India.Arie scored with two Grammys this year for Best Urban/Alternative Performance with "Little Things" and Best R&B Album with Voyage to India. Ashanti won best contemporary R&B album for her debut album, Ashanti, while Eminem took home two awards.

Shut Out at the Show
Some of music’s most successful young stars were shut out of Grammys. Avril Lavigne, who performed her hit "Sk8r Boi" and was nominated in five categories, did not win any awards. Pink, Vanessa Carlton, Britney Spears and 'N Sync also failed to win the Grammy gold.
