The Florida Marlins are World Series champions! Florida beat the favored New York Yankees 2-0 in game six of the World Series Saturday to become the champions of baseball. They won the Series four games to two.
Underdogs on Top
Few thought the Marlins would win it all. "We were on a mission. Nobody gave us a chance and here we are, the World Series champs," said Marlins Manager Jack McKeon, the oldest manager in baseball to win the World Series.
The Marlins' victory over the Yankees was underdog Florida's third straight series comeback in the playoffs. The Marlins came back during the first two rounds of the Series.

They trailed the San Francisco Giants in the opening round before winning three games to one. They trailed the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in the National League finals before winning three in a row to win that series in seven games.
Marlins pitcher Josh Beckett, 23, won the deciding game. He gave up just five hits to shut out the Yankees, 2-0. He was named the Series' Most Valuable Player. "We got a bunch of guys on our team that truly believed in our team," said Beckett.
Here’s how the rest of the Series played out:
The Series started Saturday, when the Marlins took game one in New York, 3-2. The Yanks came back, though, beating the Marlins, 6-1, in game two. New York's Andy Pettitte pitched into the ninth inning of the game to shut down the Marlins.
The Yankees won game three of the Series, 6-1, on Tuesday night. Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina struck out nine and got the win for New York.
Extra Innings Win
The Marlins tied the Series Wednesday night with a 12th inning leadoff homerun by Gonzalez. The homer lifted the Marlins to a 4-3 win over the Yankees in game four. That game will be remembered as the last for legendary Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens. The pitching ace, who has more than 300 wins, is expected to retire.
Florida took a 3-2 lead in the Series Thursday, winning game five, 6-4. Marlins pitcher Brad Penny gave up just one earned run in seven innings to beat the Yankees for the second time in the Series. He also won game one.
