Behind the Bylines
Jill Marie Egan
Meet... Jill Marie Egan
Birthdate: February 3rd
What was your favorite school subject?
English and Government.
When/how did you first know you wanted to write?
I used to be really shy and writing was a way for me to express myself. I knew I wanted a career in writing when I was in college and had a job as a reporter. I had so much fun interviewing people and writing about what I learned, it didn’t seem like work at all.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I like learning new things all the time. I like researching a subject and then trying to put the information together so that it’s interesting to other people – especially kids!
How did you develop a nose for the news?
I’ve always been curious about what’s going on in the world and started reading the newspaper when I was in second grade. My parents have always encouraged me to keep up on current events and to ask lots of questions.
How do you overcome writer's block?
I take a walk or do something unrelated for a while. Then I write down all the things that I want to say and try to weave them together.
What do you write best with or on?
I write best on a computer, but I always start by taking notes with a pen and paper. That gets my creative juices flowing. My favorite place to write is my journal because I can say anything I want and nobody knows or cares!
Who do you look up to?
I look up to my grandma. She is funny, adventurous and smart. I also admire people who devote themselves to reaching their goals, whether it’s becoming a dancer, skydiving, being a leader, or going to school.
