Behind the Bylines
Dina's byline
Meet... Dina El Nabli
Birthdate: August 1st
What was your favorite school subject?
I had two favorites: English and Drama
When/how did you first know you wanted to write?
When I was in sixth grade, I used to make up plots for my favorite television shows just for fun. I quickly accumulated a small collection of scripts and would rewrite different parts each time I had a new idea. That's when I knew.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I am a very curious person and I love finding answers to questions by reading and writing the news. I learn new things every day and that's the best perk of all.
How did you develop a nose for the news?
I learned at a daily newspaper, where I spent five years as a reporter. Working with other reporters and editors helped me gain the skills I needed to spot and develop a good news story.
How do you overcome writer's block?
At work, I start by drinking a diet coke and sitting down at my computer. Then I start to write, anything, and keep writing until the words start to come together on the screen. At home, I take a break by going for a walk or calling a friend.
What do you write best with or on?
Definitely a computer. It's been so long since I wrote on anything else.
Who do you look up to?
I look up to my parents for coming to the U.S. from Egypt and Lebanon and providing my brother and I with the many opportunities we've had throughout our lives. I look up to people who devote their lives to helping others like the people who travel to developing countries to help those most in need, especially women and children. I also admire the volunteer first aid workers and firefighters who make a difference in small towns and big cities all across America and the public servants whose goal is to make the world a better place.
