Meet... Elizabeth Winchester
Birthdate: May 21st
What was your favorite school subject?
Social Studies
When/how did you first know you wanted to write?
When I was 8 or 9 years old, I started a neighborhood newspaper with my brother and two friends. The newspaper folded after I had a falling out with a key member of my staff, but I had really enjoyed the writing while it lasted.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I'm always learning something new and sharing what I learn with kids and teachers.
How did you develop a nose for the news?
In college I took a course called "the Media and the Message" taught by CNN Washington Bureau Chief Frank Sesno. After the course, I applied for a summer internship with CNN.
How do you overcome writer's block?
I go running.
What do you write best with or on?
I really like the mechanical Papermate sharpwriter pencil.
Who do you look up to?
Kathleen Cusack, a good friend and former colleague/mentor. She's creative, funny and very dedicated to her family AND her work. (Also, she's related to actor John Cusack.)
