Behind the Bylines

Kathy H

Meet... Kathy Satterfield

Birthdate: November 12th

What was your favorite school subject?
English and Miss Brewer's History (NOT your usual class. We got to dress up like George Washington, Ben Franklin and other famous forefathers and act out important events in history).

When/how did you first know you wanted to write?
The day I was born! Actually, a little later than that, but it has been for as long as I can remember. I love to read, and that inspired me to start writing.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I like the idea of being able to reach out to a lot of people at once. And, it doesn't hurt that everyone I work with is really smart and nice.

How did you develop a nose for the news?
Current events quizzes. We had them every week in school, so I realized I couldn't get away with reading just the comics anymore.

How do you overcome writer's block?
I stop what I'm doing and get some fresh air. Sometimes, standing on your head works, too. My advice: Do something fun so your brain gets a rest.

What do you write best with or on?
I write best on the subway because there are so many interesting characters to work with. I write best with my journal because it's like talking to a good friend who won't criticize anything I say.

Who do you look up to?
My mom. She's the nicest person I know, and she has been with me through good times and bad. She also makes a mean snickerdoodle (sugar cookie)!
