Message to the Nation
On February 2, President George W. Bush gave an important speech. He spoke before members of Congress. Millions of Americans watched on television.
The State of the Union address gives the President a chance to present his plans for the nation. George Washington delivered the first annual message in 1790.
President Bush praised the Iraq election. He said it would "bring more hope and progress to a troubled region." He promised to continue working for peace and freedom throughout the world.
Bush also talked about issues at home. He spoke about health care, education and helping Americans succeed. He has asked lawmakers to change a program that helps support workers when they retire.
