The President's Travels

Hello, neighbors! On March 8, President George W. Bush set out on a six-day trip. He planned to visit five nations that are south of the United States. Bush scheduled meetings with the presidents of Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.

The President hopes to show that the U.S. wants to help its neighbors. "The trip is to remind people that we care," he said.

Nearly one out of four people in the region lives on less than two dollars a day. Before he left, Bush announced new aid programs to boost "people-to-people ties." He told Hispanic business leaders in the U.S., "It is in our national interest to help the people in our neighborhood succeed."

Some people in the area are opposed to Bush's visit. Even before the President's arrival, protesters marched in the streets of Brazil and Colombia.
