Tough Talk About Toys UPDATE

Toymakers and government leaders met in Washington, D.C., last week. They discussed how to protect American kids from unsafe toys. The meetings came after recalls of millions of toys that were made in China. The toys had paint containing lead, a dangerous metal.

Officials asked toy-company leaders why the unsafe products were able to enter the United States. Mattel's top boss, Robert Eckert, said Chinese factories "ignored" standards. "We were let down, and we let you down," Eckert told the officials. He said he will visit factories in China.

But lawmakers criticized American toy companies for allowing dangerous toys to be sold. They also promised to hold more inspections of products that enter the country.
