She Commands the Station

Last week, a rocket blasted off from a launching pad in Kazakhstan (kah-zak-stan), in Central Asia. The craft was headed to the International Space Station (ISS). On board were an American, a Russian and a Malaysian. The American, Peggy Whitson, will be the station's first woman commander. This is Whitson's second trip to the ISS. In 2002, she spent six months on the station. During that time, she carried out 21 experiments and also took a four-hour spacewalk!

The new mission is special because it is the first time a Malaysian has taken a trip to space. Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is Muslim. He brought special foods along to celebrate the end of Ramadan, a Muslim holiday.
