China's Olympic New Year
China rang in the new year with a celebration of Olympic proportions! On January 1, the country kicked off its 220-day countdown to the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. The celebration included colorful fireworks, singing and dancing. The games are set to run from August 8 to 24.
China is spending about $40 billion to clean up pollution and to make Beijing more modern. Chinese president Hu Jintao says that he hopes the Olympics will help promote more "understanding between the people of China and the world."
