Great Apes Get a Boost

Great apes got some good news last week. Scientists in Indonesia have discovered a new population of orangutans (uh-rang-uh-tangs). As many as 2,000 of the animals were found on Borneo island. The apes are endangered.

Fewer than 60,000 orangutans are left in the wild. They live in the rain forests of Indonesia and Malaysia. Building in the area is destroying their forests. Experts say the apes could be extinct within 20 years.

But the new discovery raises hopes. "We still have a chance to save this animal," says ape expert Paul Hartman.
