Man on the Moon

On July 20, 1969, millions of people turned on their televisions to watch American astronaut Neil Armstrong walk on the surface of the moon. He was standing where no human had ever stood before. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," he said.

One of his crew, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, joined him on the gray, dusty soil. The astronauts set up scientific experiments and collected soil samples. They planted an American flag on the moon.

Back to the Moon

NASA plans to send astronauts back to the moon in 2020. The first exploration mission will blast off this June. NASA's goal is to build a base on the moon where astronauts could live for months.

Grey Hautaluoma works for NASA's moon exploration program. "We're excited about going back to the moon," he says. "There's a lot that we have yet to learn."
