A Prize for Obama
President Barack Obama had a big surprise on October 9. He was named the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Each year, the important honor is given to a person or group working to make the world better. These winners might work for peace, or to get rid of poverty or to fight illness.
Obama was given the award only nine months after he became President. Some people say he will have to work hard to live up to the prize because he got it so early in his term. Obama said he was accepting the award as "a call to action."
The President will travel to Oslo, Norway, to accept the award on December 10. He will give the $1.4 million prize money to charity.
