After 88 years, the Chicago White Sox can finally call themselves baseball champions. On October 27, the team won the World Series for the first time since 1917! It was the third championship title for the team, who won in 1906 and 1917, and their first World Series appearance since 1959. Some fans called the team the "Black Sox" because they couldn't win the championship. After such a long wait, the victory sure was sweet.
The White Sox had a nearly perfect postseason. They lost only one game. They swept the Boston Red Sox in the first round and defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in five games to take the American League title. The unstoppable Sox then beat the Houston Astros in four straight games to win the World Series. Game three was the longest World Series game in history. It lasted 5 hours and 41 minutes.
The White Sox had long been standing in the shadow of the Cubs, Chicago's more popular baseball team. Though the hard-luck Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908, the rivalry between the two teams is intense. But the excitement of having a team from Chicago in the World Series proved to be more important to some Cubs fans. Many cheered for the White Sox after their big win.
For winning their first World Series title in 88 years, the Chicago White Sox are nominees for TFK People of the Year.
