What’s the Story? Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt) is a foodie rat with a superb sense of taste. He wants more than anything to become a chef. His inspiration? The late French chef, Auguste Gusteau (voiced by Brad Garrett), whose motto is
"Anyone can cook." Remy finds himself in Gusteau's restaurant, an old
Parisian gem that has fallen on hard times with the loss of two of its five
Michelin stars. (The stars are awarded to restaurants of exceptional
quality.) To fulfill his dream to cook, Remy must team up with a clumsy
garbage boy who works at Gusteau's. The pair's
creations impress the customers. But can Remy's interpretation of a
traditional stewed vegetable dish, Ratatouille, impress the irascible food
critic, Anton Ego (voiced by Peter O'Toole), and win back the restaurant's
reputation?
Did You Know? The director, Brad Bird, and his film crew took cooking classes and frequented many French restaurants to create a believable restaurant atmosphere for the film. In fact, French chef Thomas Keller, who owns a popular restaurant called The French Laundry in Yountville, California, guided the crew through the intricacies of French cuisine and helped to develop the menu for the movie's restaurant. It is Keller's fancy version of ratatouille, confit biyaldi, that appears in the pivotal scene in the movie. |
