What's the Story? The Golden Compass, based on British author Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, finds 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) fighting a battle to save humanity. At the center of her story is the golden compass, a mystical device that can tell Lyra whatever she wants to know, including the future. The Magisterium, the ruling class of Lyra's world, enlists the help of Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman), an evil scholar, to get the compass from Lyra. With it, they can rule their world and all others. Accompanied by her friends, including Pantalaimon, an animal spirit that can change shape, and Iorek, a mighty ice-bear warrior, Lyra embarks on an epic journey to save her family and her world. First published in Great Britain under the title Northern Lights, the book was renamed when it premiered in the American market. According to Pullman, the editor who made that change was also responsible for renaming Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone into Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. |
