The name LEGO is made up of the two Danish words: leg and godt, which mean play well. For the past 50 years, that’s just what the famous bricks have inspired kids (and adults!) to do. Danish toymaker Ole Kirk Christansen created the LEGO brick in 1949. Since then, the company has produced 400 billion Legos. That’s 62 blocks for every person on Earth! To celebrate the milestone birthday, LEGO released a special-edition 1950s-style Town Plan set with three gold bricks. LEGO also held a worldwide building contest with a grand finale at Legoland Billund in Denmark.
