Star Trek Star Trek

What's the Story?
Since the original TV series debuted in 1966, the Star Trek universe has expanded to include five more shows and 10 feature films. Now, fans have another chance to go where no man has gone before with the series' latest big-screen re-imagining.

The newest story in the space-aged saga tells of a young Captain James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and his crew's maiden voyage aboard the Starship Enterprise. Before Kirk became a legendary leader, he was a rebellious young recruit in the Starfleet Academy. It's here that he meets the rest of the Enterprise gang, including his soon-to-be first officer, Spock. But at this point in time, the future best friends can't agree on anything. Kirk often leaps before he looks. Spock, who grew up on the emotion-free planet Vulcan, is ruled by logic. When the evil Captain Nero plots to destroy Earth, the two must set aside their differences in order to defeat him. Will they succeed?

TFK spoke to Pine about what it was like playing a sci-fi icon like Captain Kirk. Click here to read the full interview.

Did You Know?
The series focuses on space exploration and discovery, so the filmmakers had to create several different planet environments. One of these was the frozen planet, Delta Vega. Director J.J. Abrams had originally planned to shoot the scene in Iceland. In the end, they built a frosty set in sunny Los Angeles, California, in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium. The set was complete with "snow" made from recyclable paper products. --Vickie An
