Copy Cat! Copy Cat!
The fur is flying over the world's first cloned cat

By Claudia Wallis

As an old science editor and reporter, I thought kids would be fascinated by the idea of making exact copies of a familiar animal. But I thought it was important to raise questions about whether or not this is truly a worthwhile idea. As one scientist in the story says, "Just because you are capable of doing something, doesn't mean that you should." With this story, we were able to use some excellent reporting from TIME magazine, so my job was pretty easy--except for the challenge of explaining what cloning is! That concept is a lot easier to grasp after you've had some high school biology.
