Behind the Magic
A look at the making of the first Harry Potter movie

By Claudia Wallis

I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, so, naturally, I was thrilled to get the inside scoop on the movie. Jess Cagle, of TIME magazine, was one of very few reporters allowed on the set in London when they were filming. We had his detailed report on how they made the tense scene with the giant chess set.

The week I was writing the story, Jess was back in London to interview the director, Chris Columbus, and to get a sneak preview of the film. He phoned in some nice quotes right after the interview, and he told me he loved the movie. It was cool to get his opinion before any other critics saw the film.
