A Grand View from the Top
Visitors to the Grand Canyon, in Arizona, will soon have a new view of the scenic wonder. Skywalk is set to open on March 28.
The glass-bottom, 70-foot-long walkway is perched 4,000 feet above the floor of the Grand Canyon. It is shaped like a horseshoe and is as heavy as four jumbo jets.
The Hualapai (wall-uh-pie) tribe worked with engineers to build the $30 million steel platform. They hope that the walkway will attract tourists to their part of the canyon. Five million people visit the Grand Canyon each year.
Not everyone agrees with the decision to build Skywalk. Environmentalists and some Hualapai elders have criticized the project. The tribe considers the canyon to be sacred ground. "You have to be real gentle with the land," says Hualapai spiritual leader Frank Mapatis.
