An Ice-Free Passage?
Nearly 300 years ago, Europeans began looking for a shortcut to Asia through the Arctic Ocean. Many expeditions ended in tragedy because of the bitter cold and ship-crushing icebergs. Finally, in 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen succeeded. The journey took him three years to complete. If polar ice continues to shrink, an Arctic shortcut could someday become practical. A ship would be able to cut thousands of miles off a trip from New York City to Tokyo, Japan.
