A Governor Is Arrested
Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich (bluh-goy-uh-vich) was arrested last Tuesday. Blagojevich, a Democrat, has the task of picking a new Illinois senator to take Barack Obama's place. The governor is accused of trying to sell the Senate seat in return for cash or a high-paying job.
Blagojevich, 52, also faces other corruption charges. He denies all of them. The governor is back at work while federal investigators build their case against him.
Blagojevich could still appoint a new senator. But many political leaders believe that he should not be allowed. "No appointment by this governor, under these circumstances, could produce a credible replacement," said Illinois senator Dick Durbin.
On Wednesday, Obama called for Blagojevich to leave office.
