Peanut Butter Troubles
Peanut butter has long been a lunchtime favorite. But many parents have taken the gooey stuff off the menu. Since January, more than 1,900 peanut butter products have been recalled. Officials have linked the foods to a nationwide salmonella outbreak.
Salmonella is a harmful bacteria. Eating foods tainted with the bug can make some people very sick. The outbreak has been traced to factories owned by the Peanut Corporation of America in Georgia and Texas. Nearly 600 people in 43 states have fallen ill. Nine people have died.
Officials say that major brands of jarred peanut butter are safe. Still, sales fell last month. "My daughter loves peanut butter and jelly, but I'm going to stay away," says Lazendra Collins, of Chicago, Illinois. For more details, visit fda.gov.
