She Sees Both Sides

Author Julia Alvarez and her family moved to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic when she was 10 years old. Her new book, Return to Sender, explores the tough topic of immigration. Alvarez wants her readers to appreciate what it's like to be an immigrant. "I don't think novels are about trying to give messages," Alvarez told TFK Kid Reporter Erin Wiens St. John. "They are a way of getting people to understand the complexity of the issue."
