Are Silent Cars Safe?

Let's hear it for hybrids! Hybrid cars combine fuel-burning engines with battery-powered motors to guzzle less gas than regular cars, and they make almost no noise. But safety experts worry the silence is dangerous. Vehicles may soon be required under U.S. law to give off some sound. Automakers are consulting Hollywood sound-effects experts to create car noises. Car owners might get to choose the sound their hybrid will make. Keep your ears tuned for fake vrooms!
