Gore's Plan

TFK Kid Reporter Andrew Ravaschiere

In his new book Our Choice, former Vice President Al Gore offers solutions to the global-warming crisis. TFK Kid Reporter Andrew Ravaschiere spoke to Gore in New York City.

TFK: Why did you write Our Choice?

GORE: I thought it was time to focus on the solutions to the climate crisis.

TFK: How did you research the book?

GORE: I invited experts to present research on global warming, debate with one another and describe the best solutions. Then I talked to scientists.

TFK: Which alternative energy source is the best hope for our future?

GORE: Enough solar energy falls on the Earth every 45 minutes to equal a full year's worth of the whole world's energy use. Wind power and geothermal energy [which comes from heat within the ground] are also promising.

TFK: How do you persuade kids to take action?

GORE: Your generation is going to be here a lot longer than mine, so the impact that could hit during your lifetime would be worse.

TFK: What steps can kids take?

GORE: The most important step is to learn about global warming. Then, talk to your parents, teachers and other adults. Organize groups to get your school to recycle, to change the lightbulbs and to take other actions.

TFK: What choices have you made to fight global warming?

GORE: My family changed the lightbulbs and windows. We put 33 solar panels on the roof of our home. We dug geothermal wells under the driveway. We buy our electricity from renewable sources. We drive hybrid cars, and we recycle too.
