Go, Giraffes!

Good news for giraffes: The tallest living land species has made a big comeback in Niger (nee-zhair), a West African nation. There are nine sub-species, or different types, of giraffes in Africa. The animals that live in Niger are the most endangered subspecies. In 1996, there were only 50. Now, their population has swelled to more than 200.

What saved the giraffes? In 1998, Niger's government passed laws banning giraffe hunting. Now, with no predators remaining in the area, their numbers are naturally on the rise.
