New Jersey Is Berry Proud
Last week, the Garden State picked a new fruit for itself. At Veterans Memorial Elementary School in Brick, New Jersey, Governor James McGreevey signed a law that named the blueberry the official state fruit.
Last year, fourth graders at the school learned that New Jersey lacked a symbolic fruit. The students and their teachers introduced a bill to the state assembly, proposing the blueberry as the state fruit. They also gathered some 15,000 signatures on a petition and lobbied lawmakers.
"There were so many details," Gail Damiano, a teacher, told TFK.
Governor McGreevey thanked the students and said that they proved "you can make a difference through government."
