Chicago's City Hall Green Roof, Chicago, IL - green roof

At the request of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, architect William McDonough + Partners (WM+P), turned the top of the 11-story City Hall building into a green roof. The garden rooftop cools the building, reducing energy costs, and soaks up water after storms. The blanket of flowers, grass and soil also helps combat the "urban heat island effect" that traps heat and pollution in congested downtown areas. The green roof is now one of more than 200 green roofs across the city.
