George W. Bush, President-elect
The Texas Governor is the winner of one of the most unusual elections
ever
George W. Bush started the year 2000 with enough popularity and funds to become the next President. After a Supreme Court ruling ended a dispute over election results in Florida, he gained the electoral votes he needed to ultimately win the presidency. On December 13, Bush gave his acceptance speech with a call for peace and unity to all Americans. This ended one of the strangest elections in U.S. history - one that did not officially end until 36 days after Election Day, November 7.
 | As a young boy, George W. Bush felt right at home on the range.
| Though Bush's father is former President George Bush and his brother is Florida Governor Jeb Bush, this Republican presidential candidate insists that he wasn't born to be President, or even a politician. Born on July 6, 1946 in Midland, Texas, George W. watched his father become successful in Texas' booming oil business. After graduating from Yale University and Harvard University's business school, Bush served in the Texas Air National Guard. Afterwards, Bush went into the oil business.
Bush made a run for the House of Representatives in 1978, but lost a close race. Disappointed, he gave up his own political career to assist his father's campaign as a speechwriter and advisor. His father, George H. Bush, became Ronald Reagan's Vice President in 1980, was reelected with Reagan in 1984, and served as President himself between 1988 and 1992.
In 1994, 16 years after he last ran for office, George W. Bush became interested in politics once again. This time, he ran for and was elected Governor of Texas. In 1998, voters gave him a second four-year term, which he is still serving. Bush's successful record caught the attention of Republicans looking for the right man to take over the White House in 2000.
