TIME For Kids National Teacher Board

In addition to teaching students about current events and newsworthy topics, I use TIME for Kids to teach my students various reading comprehension skills and strategies. For example, my students practice prediction skills using prior knowledge of topics, titles of articles, photographs and context clues from the cover.
My students have also learned how to use context clues to construct meaning when reading. They gather information from the photographs, illustrations, diagrams, titles, headings, and captions within a TIME for Kids magazine. They build vocabulary skills through the unique vocabulary words highlighted in each issue.
Through the use of the magazine, I have been able to teach my students how to think beyond the text. They have learned how to individually infer meaning and draw conclusions from the text. I have also used the magazine to teach my students the differences between facts and opinion. My students and I enjoy using TIME for Kids, and find it is a wonderful genre of non-fiction text.
