TIME For Kids National Teacher Board

TFK is an essential component of my students' education. Through the magazine, my students are exposed to a variety of topics that affect not only their lives, but also the lives of others. They instantly relate to the information and create connections to the text. My students practice vital comprehension skills, from summarizing a story to evaluating an issue presented in the magazine. Their lives are enriched because they can converse with their family members about current events.
I like to take advantage of the fact that every student gets his or her own copy of TFK. Many students collect the Top 5 lists, and also make their own. They cut apart the magazine and write about their favorite article. They take home their issues of TFK to share with their families.
TFK is an excellent resource for building vocabulary. We practice using context clues to interpret meaning. And I find that students are motivated to uncover the meaning of a word in order to relate it back to the topic of a story.
I use TFK to get my students excited about reading. Many of the children are interested in science. Through TFK, they are able to learn about the latest discoveries. They also love to see how children around the world live, and through this, they learn both to accept diversity and to recognize shared experiences. Through our discussions that stem from articles in TFK, my students come to see themselves as indispensable members of society.
