Brazil

A Day in the Life

What's it like to be a kid in Brazil? We asked 11-year-old Lizie Sousa Bonim of Rio de Janeiro. Here's how Lizie described a typical day in her life:

8:00 A.M. I get up and have coffee and then take a shower. Then I start my homework. Sometimes I watch television. I like to watch Angelica (she's the host of a children's TV show). I study in our main room with my sister, who is 12.

11:00 A.M. I have lunch with my mom and sister. We have rice and beans or potatoes, with beef, fish or kibe (an Arab snack that is popular in Brazil. It's made of minced meat cooked in dark flour). Fish is my favorite. It's healthy and tasty too.

11:30 A.M. When I am finished with lunch, I get my stuff together to go to school. My mom takes my sister and me on the city bus and drops us off. Then she goes to work as a baby sitter.

12:40 P.M. I arrive at school and play with my friends or chat until class starts at 12:50. We have classes in English, Portuguese, history, geography and other subjects. There are 40 children in my class, both boys and girls. I am popular with them. Art is my favorite class. I like drawing landscapes using colored pens. I want to be a designer when I grow up.

3:20 P.M. We have a short break, and I chat with friends or play hide-and-seek in the school courtyard. Then we go back and have more classes.

5:30 P.M. I take the bus home with my sister. Sometimes we go straight home, but other times we go to where my mom works. The bus takes us through the neighborhood near Copacabana beach. I like that because I can see all the shops. I like Lojas Americanas, a big department store. The prices are low there, and I can buy clothes. I like to wear dresses and skirts, although the rules say I have to wear trousers at school.

6:30 P.M. Normally I get home and I take a shower. I study for half an hour.

7:00 P.M. I watch television. I like cartoons, especially the ones with Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird.

8:00 P.M. I have my evening meal with my mom and sister. Sometimes I get dessert. I like a sweet pudding we have in Brazil called doce de leite (doh-say day lay-chay), which is made of condensed milk. After we eat, I sometimes listen to music. I like funk music [a popular kind of Brazilian rap]. Sometimes on the weekends, I go to Barra beach with my uncle. It's nice and calm there. I like to swim and play volleyball, but I like soccer too. My favorite team is Fluminense.

9:30 P.M. Bedtime. I share a room with my sister. The last thing I do is brush my teeth and say my prayers.
