Mini-Lesson

Practicing Paraphrasing

Mini-Lesson: Grades 2-3

Students will practice paraphrasing what they read.

1. As you read aloud the timeforkids.com news story Lighting the Flame stop after each paragraph and have students point out what they think is the most important fact in the paragraph. Then have students paraphrase that fact, or restate it in their own words.

2. Tell students that readers can understand news articles better when they think about how they would explain the article to someone else. When students paraphrase a story in their own words it also helps them to remember what they read.

3. For homework, have students tell an adult what they learned from today's timeforkids.com news article.
