Mini-Lesson

Earth Day

Grades 2-3

Objective: Students will prepare Earth-Day themed skits.

1. Tell students that on April 22, people around the world will take time out to celebrate the Earth. Have students read What on Earth Is Earth Day? As you read the article together, have students think of a way to complete the sentence: We celebrate Earth Day because... Chart and discuss students' ideas.

2. Next, divide the class into small groups. Have each group prepare a skit that demonstrates one way that kids can help take care of the planet. Use the article Celebrate Earth Day

3. Have students perform their skits in front of the class, or for a group of younger kids. Challenge them to think of Earth-friendly changes that they can implement at school. Ask: How can one person's actions help save the planet?

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Have students reflect on some more ways that they can help the environment by completing the worksheet TFK Earth Day Challenge.

Ask students to write about a place in the outdoors where they love to spend time. Encourage them to describe not only how the place looks, but also how it sounds, smells and makes them feel.
