Objective: Students will learn about the history of Mother's Day.

1. Before passing out the latest timeforkids.com story, A May Day for Mom, share with students the headline and subhead. Ask: What do you expect to learn about Mother's Day from this article? Have students share at least two predictions with a partner.

2. As students read, encourage them to look for the information they predicted they would find. Then, ask: In what country were the earliest celebrations of Mother's Day held? In England, during the 1600's, what was the name of the holiday for honoring mothers? When did people in the United States start celebrating Mother's Day?

3. Focus students' attention on the last paragraph of the article. Encourage each student to show appreciation for his or her mother (or an important caregiver) by conducting an interview to learn more about her. Use this worksheet to help students plan and record the interview. Set aside class time for students to share what they have learned with the rest of the class.
