Reflecting on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

1. Ask: What words would you use to describe civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.? Write student responses on the board.

2. As a class, have students read the article, A New Look at King. Ask students to underline facts and details in the article that describe King's character and beliefs.

3. Have students share what they learned about King based on their reading.

THINK: What were the most important events in King's life? Explain.

EXTENSION: Have students make a list of the qualities and character traits that made King a leader. Encourage students to cite specific examples from the article to support their responses.
