World Report
Mini-Lesson
Using Maps and Globes
Grades 4-6
Objective: Students will locate countries on a world map or globe.
1. Tell students that the latest timeforkids.com news story is about an earthquake that happened in Indonesia. Ask: Where is Indonesia? In what continent is Indonesia? What other countries do you think are near Indonesia?
2. Before passing out the article, Multiple Earthquakes Rock Indonesia , tell students that as they read they’re job is to circle words in the article that tell them more about where Indonesia is located.
3. Allow time for students’ questions and comments after the reading. Then have students share the words they circled. (Examples include island, coast, Indian Ocean and “Ring of Fire.”)
4. Finally, have students find Indonesia on a world map or globe. Ask: What is the capital of Indonesia? What are the names of the Indonesian islands? What countries are near Indonesia? What bodies of water are near Indonesia?
