Mini-Lesson
Environmental Awareness
Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6
Objective: Students will work to promote environmental awareness.
1. Start a discussion about how kids can help the environment. List students' ideas on the board. Ask: When did you start caring about the environment? How did you find out about these ways to protect the planet? Point out that there are still many people who do not know what they can do to take care of the earth.
2. Have students read the timeforkids.com article, Picturing a Better World. Ask: What is the purpose of holding World Environment Day each year? How is 13-year-old Connie Yu promoting environmental awareness?
3. Divide the class into groups of three or four. Challenge each group to come up with and execute a plan for promoting environmental awareness. For example, they may choose to create a banner, build a website or perform a skit. Use the article 10 Ways You Can Make a Difference to give them some ideas.
