Helping Out

Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6

Objective: Students will design fliers to publicize the Pan Massachusetts Kids Rides.

1. Start a discussion about raising money for an important cause. Ask: Have you ever participated in a fundraising event? What was it for? How did helping make you feel? Tell students that they will be reading a story about kids who participated in bike rides to raise money for cancer research and treatment.

2. Pass out the latest timeforkids.com news story, Riding for A Cure. Tell students to imagine that it is their job to design fliers to publicize the Pan-Massachusetts Kids Rides. As students read the story, have them underline important information to be included in their flier. Then, give them time to create a flier.

3. Have students share their work. Encourage them to find out about fundraising events in which they would like to participate. Point out that creating and posting informational fliers is one of many ways that kids can lend a hand.

Extend Learning: Have students read about more kids who have worked to help others. Use the worksheets A Do-Good Duo and Kids Can Make a Difference.
