Persuasive Writing
Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6
Objective: Students will write a persuasive speech to deliver at the International Youth Day event.
1. Review the concept of climate change with students. (Climate change is caused by air pollution. As pollution increases, carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases build up. When too much heat is held in the atmosphere, the Earth grows warmer.) Tell students that more than 1,000 kids from around world gathered in New York City on Tuesday to discuss what young people can do to fight climate change.
2. Have students read the timeforkids.com news story, A Time for Action. Then, have students imagine that they are going to deliver a speech before all of the kids attending the International Youth Day event. They will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and suggestions on how to protect the Earth with kids from all over the world. Have students brainstorm ideas with a partner.
3. Challenge students to write the speech they would deliver. Remind them that in order to persuade others to follow their suggestions, it is important to include facts that support their arguments.
4. Hold a mock Climate Change Conference. Have volunteers share their speeches with the class.
