Students will learn about acronyms and initializations. 1. Use timeforkids.com to teach acronyms and initializations. Explain that acronyms and initializations are shortcuts. For example, NASA is an acronym. It stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Instead of writing the full name every time this agency is mentioned, NASA is used as a shortcut. Tell students that an acronym is formed using the first letters of each word in a multiword name or phrase. An initialization is a little different. It is pronounced using the letters that it’s made up of. For example, TFK is an initialization for TIME For Kids. 2. Challenge students to find an initialization in the timeforkids.com news story . In paragraph 1, ISS is an example of an initialization. After mentioning the International Space Station the writers immediately refer to it, in parentheses, as ISS. In the rest of the article the space station is simply called the ISS. 3. Challenge students to name other acronyms and initializations. Examples include UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) and FYI (For Your Information). 4. Close the mini-lesson by telling students that acronyms and initializations are used often in news stories. Ask: Why do you think writers use acronyms and initializations? Why does the timeforkids.com news story, A Walk in Space, use the International Space Station’s full name followed by ISS in parentheses? Why does ISS appear without parentheses in the rest of the article? |
